My journey began back in 1994, when I opened my first salon in Northampton at the age of twenty-one. I had trained as a beauty therapist right after I had finished school and had already worked in a number of salons. I had realised early on that I had a true flair for all things nails.
My salon, Nail Techniques, was the first salon in Northampton to offer nail art, airbrushing, and coloured acrylics, among other things. Within my first year of business, I had to expand and train new staff; word was getting around about my busy salon. At one point, I had seven women working for me full-time, and we still had a client wait list. I opened my second salon in 1998.
Later, I began to want to take my passion for the nail industry one step further by becoming a teacher. It was something that I had always wanted to do, as I was often asked to train people. After educating for two years, I needed a new and exciting challenge, so in January 2009, I passed my Kinetics Instructor training program. I’m really enjoying my newest adventure as the Midlands Kinetics Nail Training School.
I like to sharpen my skills at competition too. It’s really thrilling to compete and especially gratifying when you win a prize.
There are some important things that I hope I can pass on to all my students. The first is that I believe that doing nails is not a hobby, but a profession. Also, education is the key to success, and you need a lot of patience to get that education and become successful. And it’s important to stay innovative; a good nail technician is always creative! But most of all, I want to help my students learn to set their hearts on their goals and believe in themselves. Then they’ll be able to achieve all their dreams.
